BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua)--China Electronics Corporation (CEC), one of the largest telecom equipment producers in China, launched the construction of an integrated circuit facility in a coastal area of Shanghai on Thursday.
Located in Lingang in the southeastern part of Shanghai, the new factory will cover 230,000 square meters and require a total investment of 35.9 billion yuan. Once completed, it is expected to produce 60,000 chips of 8-inch wafers and 50,000 chips of 12-inch wafers every month.
Shanghai is one of the largest IC manufacturing hubs in China. According to a report by Shanghai IC Industry Association, Shanghai's IC industry generated 118 billion yuan of sales revenue in 2017, a year-on-year increase of 12.2 percent. Lingang currently has 39 IC-related enterprises, and the local government is mulling over a 10 billion yuan of fund to boost the industry. (Contributed by Wushuang; Ding Lei, dinglei@xinhua.org)
