The German government wants to play catch up massively in the area of artificial intelligence (AI) and transform Germany into a worldwide leader for the future-oriented technology. The German Federal Cabinet adopted the cornerstones of a strategy Wednesday that should be worked out in the coming months. Research in Germany and Europe should be networked and strengthened, for example, according to the strategy. The transfer of research results should be accelerated and new startups fostered, while the necessary structural changes in companies and on the labor markets should also be supported.
The conservative Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), the parties in Germany’s ruling coalition, already agreed to turn Germany in a worldwide leading location for research in artificial intelligence in their coalition agreement. The US and China are currently far ahead with this technology, according to experts.
Examples for the use of artificial intelligence include autonomous driving cars, language assistant and machine learning - but also purchasing suggestions in online retailers, the calculation of credit default risks or the analysis of X-ray images.
