BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The expansion project of Zimbabwe’s Hwange coal-fired power station undertaken by Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) was officially started on June 27.
It is the largest thermal power project in Zimbabwe contracted by a Chinese company and the largest energy infrastructure construction project since Zimbabwe’s independence.
The Hwange project is located in the coal-producing area about 800 km west of Harare, the capital city of Zimbabwe. It currently has 6 units installed with a total capacity of 920,000 kilowatts. After the project is completed, the total installed capacity will be expanded to 1.52 million kilowatts.
The project is expected to greatly improve the current situation of electricity shortage in Zimbabwe, effectively fill the gap between electricity supply and demand and help improve environment in the country. (Edited by Yang Qi, kateqiyang@xinhua.org)
