BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- China welcomes Portugal's former deputy prime minister Antonio Vitorino being elected as director general of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a foreign ministry spokesperson said Monday.
China will continue to support and coordinate with the work of the director general of the IOM, spokesperson Lu Kang said at a daily press briefing.
Calling Vitorino the right person for the job, with rich experience and good qualifications, Lu expressed his hope that Vitorino would lead the IOM in making important contribution to the orderly flow of the global population.
Vitorino, 61, was elected as the director general on June 29. He is expected to begin his directorship on Oct. 1, 2018.
The IOM is the UN Migration Agency and the leading inter-governmental organization in its field.
