Thai Prime Minister urges Ministry of Commerce to curb soaring prices of glutinous rice

August 27, 2019

Abstract : Prime Minster and Defense Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha urged the Ministry of Commerce to curb the prices of glutinous rice which reach a record high as soon as possible

InfoQuest (August 26, 2019) -- Prime Minster and Defense Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha urged the Ministry of Commerce to curb the prices of glutinous rice which reach a record high as soon as possible, according to Ms. Narumon Pinyo Sinwat, spokesperson for the Prime Minister. At present, Deputy Prime Minster and Commerce Minister Jurin Laksanawisit has ordered the Department of Internal Trade to control the hoarding of glutinous rice to prevent the prices from soaring further, and hold discussions with millers, traders and cooperatives so they can quickly produce packed glutinous rice at a special price to relieve people's trouble.

More detailed measures are needed to address the problem of high prices. Mrs. Narumon attributed the current expensive glutinous rice to drought that caused its low yield. "The situation should improve when the new yield comes out in October", she said.

In addition, the prime minister also addressed the issue of driving economic growth. Apart from the government's emergency stimulus measures, each agency must accelerate the work they are responsible for, so as to promote domestic investment and spending, and in the long run to solve problems, such as enhancing the consumption of domestic rubber, generating power through palm oil, promoting the application of research results, implementing BCG Model for economic sustainability, and solving Bangkok's traffic jams. In particular, regarding the highway and toll road against which people lodge complaint, the prime minister has ordered the Ministry of Transport to work out a solution as soon as possible.

Mr. Prayut also stressed that the government is concerned about every issue concerning people's livelihood and has included these issues in the government's emergency economic stimulus package. Now all relevant government agencies have received specific policy implementation guidelines and the results will be seen soon.
