Its GDP accounted for 8.8 percent of the national total in 2017. Shandong is the second most populous province of China, accounting for 7.2 percent of the country’s total population by the end of 2017. Shandong is also the second largest coastal port province of China. In 2017, the cargo throughput at Shandong’s coastal ports exceeded 1.5 billion tons, ranking the second in the country.

Shandong is an important production base for grain, cotton, oil, meat, eggs and milk in China. It has well-developed light industries, especially textile and food industries. Shandong is the largest exporter of vegetables, fruits, and aquatic products in the country. Its exports of agricultural products make up nearly one-fourth of China’s total agricultural exports.

As of the end of 2019, the province had a permanent resident population of 100.70 million. Its GDP in 2019 registered 7.1 trillion yuan.
