Shandong is one of the most economically developed provinces in China. It has been the third largest in the country in terms of regional GDP since 2007. Its GDP accounted for 9 percent of the national total in 2016. Shandong is the second most populous province of China, accounting for 7.2 percent of the country’s total population by the end of 2016. Shandong is also the second largest coastal port province of China. In 2016, the cargo throughput at Shandong’s major coastal ports accounted for 17.6 percent of the country’s total. Shandong is an important production base for grain, cotton, oil, meat, eggs and milk in China. It has well-developed light industries, especially textile and food industries. Shandong is the largest exporter of vegetables, fruits, and aquatic products in the country. Its exports of agricultural products make up nearly one-fourth of China’s total agricultural exports.
