The region neighbours Tibet Autonomous Region to the south, and Qinghai and Gansu provinces to the southeast. It borders the countries of Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. Xinjiang is administrated as one of China’s five autonomous regions.
