Volkswagen’s (VW) Audi subsidiary wants to make some headway in the all-important Chinese car market. The car manufacturer wants to have up 10 variations of its sport-utility vehicle (SUV) on Chinese roads by 2022, said Audi China President Joachim Wedler this week in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.
The Ingolstadt-based company presented the Audi Q8 SUV in the port city near Hong Kong for the first time. The new, giant SUV should help lift Audi’s sales worldwide. Seven of Audi’s 10 planned SUV models should be manufactured in China on site, while three higher-priced models will arrive as imports. China recently announced it would reduce import duties on cars manufactured abroad from 25 to 15 percent as of 01 July. That increases Audi’s room for maneuver, said Wedler.
Audi likewise wants to play a bigger role on the market for electric cars, which are heavily subsidized in China because of environmental issues. The first purely battery-operated Audis should roll off the assembly line in the People’s Republic in 2020 or the year after, said Audi CEO Rupert Stadler. By 2022, five electric car models manufactured in China, four of which will be purely battery driven, should be available for customers to purchase.
