BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) -- Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com launched its JDY-800 drone, which will become an indispensable part for its smart logistics network.
The JDY-800 drone, which has a takeoff weight of 840 kilograms and a continuous flight of more than 1,000 kilometers, is expected to go into service in 2020.
“We plan to build a three-tier smart logistics network consisting of main lines, branch lines and distribution terminals. Based on the demands of different tiers, JD.com has self-developed a dozen of logistics drones in various types,” said Xiao Jun, vice president of JD.com, adding that JD.com has been granted as a logistics drone operation pilot by Civil Aviation Administration of China.
JD.com’s drones have already provided normal distribution services since last year.
Experts pointed out that smart logistics development including the Internet of Things (IoT), big data and cloud computing will promote industrial upgrading of the upstream and downstream and become the backbone of new retail industry. (Edited by Jiang Feifan, Zhang Yuan, zhangyuan11@xinhua.org)
