BEIJING, June 1 (Xinhua) -- The penetration project of the longest railway tunnel in Transcaucasia by a Chinese company was completed on May 27, marking a breakthrough in Georgia's railway modernization program.
As the left line was completed, the T9 tunnel of Georgian modernized railway project saw thorough penetration. The railway project is also an important part of the Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe railway international transportation corridor under the Belt and Road Initiative.
According to engineers for the project, the T9 tunnel, located in the central region Georgia, is over 8.3 kilometers long and it is the longest railway tunnel in Transcaucasia. It traverses the most complex section of the Caucasus mountains, making it Georgia's most difficult tunnel project in recent years.
Since 2011, China Railway 23th Bureau Group Co., Ltd. adopted dozens of international advanced construction technology and overcome a series of technical problems to ensure completion of the project on time with high standards.
The Georgian modernized railway project stretches 56.56 kilometers from Zestafoni to Khashuri. The railway’s designed speed is 120 km/h for passenger trains and 80 km/h for freight trains.
In 2020, after the completion of the railway from Georgia’ capital Tbilisi to the Black Sea port city Batumi, train running time will be shorten by more than five hours to three hours and railway goods transportation capacity will rise by 100 percent. (Edited by Yang Qi, kateqiyang@xinhua.org)
