LA PAZ, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- Bolivia took its seat on Sunday as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, President Evo Morales announced.
"From the Security Council, Bolivia will be the voice for the peoples of the world and will fight to build a world without invaders or invaded," wrote Morales on Twitter.
Bolivia's ambassador to the UN, Sacha Llorenti, also posted on Twitter that Bolivia would prioritize both regional issues, such as peace in Colombia and development in Haiti, and international affairs, such as Western Sahara and Palestine.
The Morales's government has been a frequent critic of the Security Council for lacking democratic principles, a posture it intends to maintain while sitting on it.
This is Bolivia's third time on the Council after having served there from 1964-1965 and 1978-1979. It is joined this year by Ethiopia, Italy, Kazakhstan and Sweden as non-permanent members.
Bolivia is replacing Venezuela as one of the two representatives of Latin America and the Caribbean, while Uruguay still has a year to go on its term.
