BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) - China's Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) is building a national platform for quality tracing of agricultural products, which is expected to enter trial operation by the end of this year, according to a report by China National Radio on December 4.
To secure quality of agricultural products is a key task of rural economic development and also an issue mostly concerned by Chinese people, said Chen Xiaohua, deputy head of the MOA.
MOA has launched some pilot projects for quality tracing on some key agricultural products in some key regions and cities, and has received sound effects, said Chen.
Nevertheless, quality tracing is only one of the steps to secure agricultural product quality, and it requires linkage between upstream and downstream. Meanwhile, legislation on quality tracing mechanism is urgently needed in China.
Chen noted that China might consider adding product quality tracing into the amendments of the Law of China's on Quality and Safety of Agricultural Products. (Edited by Li Xiaohui, lixh@xinhua.org)
