BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China Southern Power Grid Yunnan International Company recently signed the memorandum of understanding on ultra-high voltage power transmission from China to Vietnam via Laos with the national power company of Laos, Vietnam Hanoi-Vientiane power company and another Lao partner in Kunming, reported Yunnan Daily.

The four parties from three countries agreed on power transmission of 5-6 million kilowatts from China to Vietnam via Laos during 2021 and 2025. This is the first cross-border third-party power grid connectivity program of China. It signifies the progress made in the area of power grid connectivity between China, Laos and Vietnam.

According to reports, China Southern Power Grid Yunnan International Company has been paying close attention to the domestic and international trends of electricity supply and demand since the execution of 2004 power transmission program – the first 110 KV transmission line from China to Vietnam.

Capitalizing on abundant clean energy reserves of Yunnan, the company raised the proposal of power transmission from Yunnan to southern Vietnam, in the backdrop of southern Vietnam’s electricity woes and the blocked transmission channels.

Being beneficial to all three countries, the proposal received a quick response from the other two countries. In the future, the four parties will jointly work on the proposal’s implementation.
