BEIJING, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Upper Atbara Dams Complex, built by China Three Gorges Corporation (CTGC) and the China Water and Electric Corporation (CWE), began generating electricity on Thursday, February 2nd in Sudan.

A ceremony was held on that day to celebrate the milestone moment. Tens of thousands of local people and the country's senior officials, including the president Omar al-Bashir, also attend the ceremony.

The Sudanese President praised the outstanding performance of the Chinese enterprises in building the power project, and said the project will provide support and strong motivation for Sudan's economic and social development.

The project, which started in May 2010, can store up to 3 billion cubic meters of water and provides water for 7 million people in Sudan. One third of the country's population will benefit from the project. (CRI English)
