CGN takes over Irish wind power assets from Gaelectric

December 08, 2016

Abstract : China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), the largest nuclear power operator in China, announced on Dec. 8 that its European subsidiary has closed the acquisition of 100 percent equity of the Douvan wind power project from Gaelectric of Ireland.

SHENZHEN, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- China General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN), the largest nuclear power operator in China, announced on Dec. 8 that its European subsidiary has closed the acquisition of 100 percent equity of the Douvan wind power project from Gaelectric of Ireland.

This is by far the largest investment made by Chinese enterprise in Ireland and also the first investment by Chinese energy company in the renewable energy sector in Ireland.

The Douban wind power project, consisting of 10 operating windfarms and four under-construction farms, has a total installed capacity of 230,000 kilowatts, which is able to feed the power demand of 120,000 families and reduce 250,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission.

Earlier this year, CGN won the bid for an offshore wind power project in France and took over the largest operating wind farm in Belgium and a solar project in Senegal.

At present, CGN has controlling interest in overseas renewable energy projects with installed capacity totaling nearly 9 million kilowatts in dozens of countries including Britain, France, Egypt, South Korea and Australia.

CGN is also the largest independent power producer in Egypt and Bangladesh and the second largest in Malaysia.  (Edited by Li Xiaohui, lixh@xinhua.org)
