August 31, 2017

Another Chinese real estate developer has made public its ambitions to develop theme parks in the nation. This time Guangzhou-based developer Evergrande pledged to make the world’s largest and best theme parks.

Evergrande’s Children’s World theme parks would be “the only theme parks in the world that are indoor and open 24/7 throughout the year,” boasted Xiao En, president of Evergrande Tourism Group, at a press conference on August 27.

The company’s plan includes a total of 15 theme parks in China, which are estimated to be open for operation within two to five years. Each park will have 33 entertainment facilities, while a Disney park usually has 18-22 facilities.

Xiao introduced that the parks would target visitors aged 2 to 15, and entertainment facilities would be themed on traditional Chinese culture and history, such as the ancient myths of Chang’e and Pangu and historical battles at Chibi in the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Each of the parks target 80 million people within a radius of 500 kilometers. Annual visits could reach 15 million to 20 million, with total consumption of more than 20 billion yuan.

The theme parks would be designed by architects from top agencies, including Ideattack, ITEC, and Sanderson. The facilities have all been contracted for manufacturing by international theme park suppliers, such as Vekoma and Zamperla. All orders have been set and fulfilled, according to Evergrande’s official website.

In spite of its ambition, China’s theme park businesses are not as booming as real estate. Some 70 percent of China’s theme parks lost money, and only 10 percent turned a profit, according to business news site Qdaily.com.
