KHARTOUM, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- An Upper Atbara dams complex project, jointly built by China Three Gorges Corporation and the China Water and Electric Corporation, started generating electricity on Feb.2 in Sudan.
Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir spokes highly of the Chinese companies' outstanding performance during the construction of the project and said this project will provide strong motivation and support to the country's economic and social development.
The project, which started construction in 2010, will cover 5,000 square kilometers of irrigated area and provide some 7 million people with irrigation water in Sudan. In addition, it can provide more than one million people with electricity, benefiting about one third of the country's population.
