BEIJING, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- A project aimed at improving the water quality in Wenjiang, a district of Chengdu, got underway on Feb 9 according to China News.
Focusing on the Jiang’an River which stretches for some 12 kilometers alongside Guanghua Road, the 598.5-million-yuan (USD87 million) project is expected to take two years to complete.
Improving the water quality is an important issue in Wenjiang, which hopes to increase its credentials and become a more livable city. The project will include sewage treatment facilities, and the construction of dams and reservoirs, which is hoped to help restore the natural ecosystem along the river.
The project is part of Wenjiang’s three-year initiative to become a more water friendly city. It is also unique in that it is the first public-private partnership (PPP) in the district, championed by the Chengdu Xingrong Group, which specializes in water treatment.
“Water improvement plays an essential part in making Wenjiang a more livable city,” said Jing Renzhi, deputy director of Wenjiang District.
Chengdu enters the annual flood season in May, a critical time for the city’s water systems as it is one of the 25 cities most vulnerable to flooding in China.
