BEIJING, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Northwest Engineering Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina), signed a cooperative agreement on sustainable development of Galapagos Islands in Ecuador with the government of Galapagos.
Galapagos Islands are located in the Pacific Ocean, 1,000 kilometers west of continental Ecuador. The islands, formed by volcanic eruption, consist of 13 small islands and reefs covering an area of 7,500 square kilometers.
The islands are known for their vast number of endemic species and inspired Charles Darwin in developing his theory of evolution by natural selection. UNESCO recognized the islands in 1978 as a World Heritage Site.
Northwest Engineering has mapped up an overall planning strategy, which fully considers the capacity of the islands and sticks to the concept of sustainable development, with a goal of building a green city integrating ecological balance, environmental protection, culture and tourism.
The plan includes renewable energy development, port construction, sea transportation, desalination, city water supply and drainage projects.
From June to July 2016, Northwest Engineering initiated talks with Ecuadorian senior officials, ministries and local governments and brought up the idea of developing an “island ecological tourist city.” (Edited by Yang Qi, kateqiyang@xinhua.org)
