China Railway Engineering Equipment Group Co., Ltd. (CREG) witnessed recently breakthrough of a rectangular underpass connecting into the Havelock station on the new Thomson-East Coast MRT Line in Singapore.
The underpass is the first construction of a trenchless tunnel using rectangular tunnel boring machine (TBM) in Singapore. The rectangular TBM is used to bore a 150m underpass with an overburden of 6 meters.
The construction site is located at the congested central area and close to the Singapore River, which adds to the construction difficulty.
Compared with the circular TBMs, the space utilization rate by rectangular TBMs can be increased by 20 percent, making it an ideal choice to ease traffic pressure in inner cities.
Now the application scope of the rectangular TBMs is being further expended to underground facilities like common utilities and parking lots by CREG.
