WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Donald Trump spoke with his Mexican counterpart Enrique Pena Nieto on Wednesday after a powerful earthquake hit Mexico, the White House said.
According to White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders, the two leaders "had a lengthy call." More details of the call remained unclear at the moment.
Trump was criticized earlier for waiting days to call the Mexican president after a previous earthquake struck Mexico early this month.
At least 225 people were killed after a powerful earthquake hit central Mexico on Tuesday, with the death toll expected to rise due to the scale of the temblor.
The magnitude-7.1 quake toppled dozens of buildings, broke gas mains and sparked fires, sending thousands of people fleeing into the streets in panic.
Its proximity to the capital and its shallowness, just 51 km below ground, made the quake as intense as its destructive 8.2-magnitude predecessor that hit southern Mexico on Sept. 7, reportedly the strongest quake to jolt the country in a century.
