KHARTOUM, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- The United Nations on Monday announced allocation of 21 million U.S. dollars to help thousands of people in need of humanitarian assistance across Sudan.
The UN, through the Sudan Humanitarian Fund (SHF), a multi-donor fund that responds to critical humanitarian needs in Sudan, has allocated 21 million dollars to help thousands of people in need of humanitarian assistance across Sudan in 2017," said UN in a statement Monday.
"The humanitarian challenges in Sudan are diverse and complex, including in Darfur where over 3 million people are estimated to be in need of humanitarian assistance," it noted.
It said the funds to the SHF for this allocation have been donated by the governments of Denmark, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
The SHF focuses on providing emergency assistance to internally displaced persons, refugees, and also those returning home after a long period of displacement.
The UN is operating in Sudan via around 21 of its humanitarian organizations; the most prominent of them is the World Food Programme (WFP) which has been active in Sudan since 1963.
There are also around 150 foreign organizations in Sudan with their activities focusing at the armed conflict zones where the Sudanese army is fighting four armed groups in Darfur, South Kordofan and Blue Nile regions. Enditem
