LUSAKA, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government intends to buy its own ships to be used on a harbor situated north of the country, state media reported on Thursday.
The government will procure its own ships for the Mpulungu Harbor to boost the movement of goods and people.
Minister of Transport and Communication Brian Mushimba said the purchase of government's own passenger and cargo ships will help raise the export of goods to the Great Lakes Region.
Currently, all the cargo ships used to transport goods to the Great Lakes Region are owned by foreign investors, he added.
According to him, the procurement is likely to be done next year after the modernization of the harbor.
"Government is currently modernizing the Mpulungu Harbor. So far, the feasibility study, scoping works and detailed engineering study have been done. Once all the works are done, a cargo ship and a passenger vessel would be procured," he is quoted as saying by the Times of Zambia.
Mpulungu Harbor is situated on Lake Tanganyika, which is co-shared with Tanzania.
