Algeria, Nigeria discuss counter-terrorism cooperation

December 14, 2016

Abstract : Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Tuesday met with visiting Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, as they discussed ways of boosting bilateral cooperation, including in terms of fighting terrorism.

ALGIERS, Dec. 13 (Xinhua) -- Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on Tuesday met with visiting Nigerian Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, as they discussed ways of boosting bilateral cooperation, including in terms of fighting terrorism.

Osinbajo told reporters that his meeting with President Bouteflika was an opportunity to discuss political and counter-terrorism cooperation between Algeria and Nigeria.

"President Bouteflika expressed his support for Nigeria in its fight against terrorism and radicalism," he said.

Nigeria has been suffering from terrorism for years, as the armed group Boko Haram has been plotting several attacks against civilians and authorities.

The latest attack dates back to last Friday, as 45 civilians were killed in suicide bombing in the northeast state of Adamawa, when two females blew off themselves at a market, local media reported.

Algeria condemned the attack and urged the international community to fight terrorism and extremism.

Osinbajo said Algeria and Nigeria share strong historical relations and are bound by several agreements in various domains.

The Nigerian official started a two-day visit to Algiers on Tuesday at the invitation of President Bouteflika.
