VALLETTA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- Malta's national debt in the third quarter of 2016 went down to pre-2008 levels, Maltese authorities said on Monday.
The country's debt level in Q3 was reduced to 60.4 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP). The level was last this low in March 2008.
According to Eurostat, the European Union's statistics agency, in the past year Malta had the fifth largest reduction in national debt among all EU member states.
Malta's deficit for Q3 2016 is 0.5 percent of GDP, following a surplus in public funds in the first two quarters of the year.
