Developing energy interconnection will benefit "B&R" countries, experts

October 28, 2016

Abstract : Countries along the Belt and Road routes have big demands for building the energy interconnection network. Promoting the energy interconnection will help them resolve problems including energy shortage and energy structural transformation

BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- Countries along the Belt and Road routes have big demands for building the energy interconnection network. Promoting the energy interconnection will help them resolve problems including energy shortage and energy structural transformation and realize win-win results, said experts at an energy interconnection seminar on October 18 in Beijing.

As an emerging initiative for the interconnection, the global energy interconnection construction is marching to the stage of strategic implementation and common action. The energy interconnection has a bright development prospect in the world, especially in the countries along the routes. In the process of advancing the energy interconnection construction, they have to realize the win-win of protecting ecology and resolving energy supply, said Chen Yuan, vice chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

Energy interconnection is a new energy industrial development business with the deep integration between Internet and energy production, transportation, storage, consumption and energy market.

The traditional power grid remains the foundation and starting point of the energy interconnection. The smart power grid distribution generation and power grid should be increased step by step and use of the fossil energy should be reduced. Meanwhile, China should also expand the international energy interconnection business and promote interconnection and energy international development, said Chen.

Countries along the routes have strong energy demands, but their energy system was relatively weak. In order to cope with challenges of energy supply, air quality and climate change, developing countries along the routes are in urgent need of building the modern clean energy system, noted by Zhou Xiaoxin, director of academic board of Energy Internet Research Institute, Tsinghua University.

At present, China has already become the largest country in using new energy and renewable energy sources, with its wind power and PV power generation ranking the first in the world. The country is equipped with the strength to jointly build the clean energy system with countries along the Belt and Road routes.

Founded in the end of March this year in Beijing, the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO) is the first international organization initiated by China in the energy field, with the aim to build the global interconnected smart power grid with the ultra-high voltage grid as backbone network frame to transport clean energy.

The global energy interconnection construction is under way. The cross-border and cross-continent networking projects are under discussion to promote power interconnection among countries along the routes, said Liu Zhenya, chairman of the GEIDCO.

State Grid Corporation of China has signed the memorandum of cooperation on power interconnection in Northeast Asia with the Korea Electric Power Corporation, Soft Bank, and the OAO Rosseti. They will actively promote the power interconnection project in Mongolia, China, the Republic of Korea and Japan.

In the process of promoting the energy interconnection construction in countries along the routes, enterprises have to pay attention to innovation in technologies and business model and take different investment strategies given their different stages in energy development.

In the "going global" process, the Chinese enterprises can explore the cross-industry cooperation mode and integrate resources of upstream and downstream industrial chains, and effectively avoid geographical and legal risks, said Li Huaizhen, president of China Minsheng Investment Group.
