MEP announces environmental thresholds for modern coal chemical projects

Abstract : The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) lately announced the environmental threshold for construction of modern coal chemicalprojects.

BEIJING, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) - The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) lately announced the environmental threshold for construction of modern coal chemicalprojects.

Modern coal chemicalprojects would be sited in industrial parks in prioritized development areas and key development areas with relatively rich water resources and good environmental capacities and keep safe distance from residential areas, said MEP.

Modern coal chemical projects and expansion projects would be forbidden in nature reserve, scenic areas, drinking water source areas and main recharge areas, river source areas, important water conservation areas, ecologically fragile areas, exposed spring areas, areas that forbid or restrict coal chemical development in national main function region, and key ecological function areas in national ecological function regions.

MEP also requires that modern coal chemical projects should be properly facilitated with production equipment, dangerous chemical products storages and sewage treatment facilities.

New coal chemical projects will be highly restricted in water-poor areas as the Bohai Delta, the Yangtze River Delta and the Pearl River Delta.(Edited by Li Xiaohui, lixh@xinhua.org)
