October 21, 2026

Abstract : A two-day undergraduate seminar on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) concluded Tuesday in Colombo, bringing together 25 students from three leading Sri Lankan universities.

COLOMBO, Oct. 20 (Xinhua) -- A two-day undergraduate seminar on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) concluded Tuesday in Colombo, bringing together 25 students from three leading Sri Lankan universities.

Organized by Belt and Road Initiative Sri Lanka (BRISL) and sponsored by the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, the seminar, themed "Sri Lanka and the Belt and Road Initiative: Building Synergies for Sustainable Development," aimed to deepen young people's understanding of the BRI and its role in Sri Lanka's economic development.

Students from the University of Colombo, University of Sri Jayewardenepura and University of Kelaniya participated in discussions with academics, diplomats and development experts on the historical and diplomatic dimensions of the BRI, Sri Lanka's strategic autonomy in the Indian Ocean, development financing, debt restructuring, economic opportunities and human resource development.

Participants also visited Huawei Technologies Lanka, Port City Colombo and Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT), gaining firsthand insights into digital technologies, major infrastructure investments, port operations and Sri Lanka's growing role as a regional trade and logistics hub.

The event, supported by CICT, Huawei and Port City Colombo, sought to promote academic exchanges and enhance Sri Lankan students' understanding of international economic cooperation and sustainable development opportunities.
