Feature: Chinese NEVs gain traction in Mongolia amid oil supply constraints

October 13, 2026

Abstract : Facing oil supply constraints and fuel shortages, Mongolia is accelerating its transition to new energy vehicles (NEVs), as affordable, reliable Chinese NEVs rapidly gain popularity.

ULAN BATOR, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Facing oil supply constraints and fuel shortages, Mongolia is accelerating its transition to new energy vehicles (NEVs), as affordable, reliable Chinese NEVs rapidly gain popularity.

Mongolia is advancing its transition to electric mobility by incorporating the promotion of NEVs and the development of charging networks into its medium- and long-term national development plans. The country plans to establish around 500 electric vehicle charging stations, known as "green stations," in the capital, Ulan Bator, and other parts of the country over the next two years.

In the past, many local consumers had reservations about NEVs, with some concerned about their performance in Mongolia's harsh winter climate. However, as fuel supplies tighten and the cost of running conventional gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles rises, Chinese NEVs have attracted growing interest.

Otgonbayar is among the early adopters of Chinese NEVs in Ulan Bator. "I bought a Chinese NEV in 2024, and after using it for more than two years, my perception of these vehicles has changed completely," he said.

Otgonbayar noted that a full charge costs just 20,000 Mongolian tugriks (about 5.6 U.S. dollars), more than sufficient for his daily commute, while offering a smoother driving experience.

Like Otgonbayar, an increasing number of local vehicle owners are recommending Chinese NEVs to their friends and family after experiencing their benefits firsthand. Choosing Chinese NEVs and embracing greener mobility are becoming increasingly popular among Ulan Bator residents.

At a Chinese NEV dealership in Ulan Bator, customers are regularly seen enquiring about vehicles, placing orders and collecting their purchases. Sales staff said sales had risen significantly in recent months, reflecting strong market interest.

In recent years, several Chinese companies have stepped up cooperation with Mongolia in the new energy sector. Zheng Dongdong, vice president of Zero Carbon Engine Technology Group Co., Ltd., said the company was working with relevant local authorities to develop supporting measures to facilitate the introduction and wider adoption of NEVs.
