China looks ahead to LA28 after topping Asian Games medal table

October 10, 2026

Abstract : After wrapping up the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with 341 medals and topping the medal table for the 12th consecutive edition last weekend, Chinese athletes are now setting their sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, China's top sports official said at a conference on Friday.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- After wrapping up the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games with 341 medals and topping the medal table for the 12th consecutive edition last weekend, Chinese athletes are now setting their sights on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, China's top sports official said at a conference on Friday.

"The 169 gold medals marked a new record for the Chinese delegation at an Asian Games held overseas. Chinese athletes set eight world records at the continental event and achieved world-class performances in many sports," said Gao Zhidan, director of China's General Administration of Sport.

At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Chinese athletes excelled in sports such as athletics and swimming. China's women's volleyball team retained its title, while the men's football team also secured a podium finish.

A total of 548 Chinese athletes made their Asian Games debuts at the event, with young talents such as Yu Zidi, Zhang Zhanshuo, Chen Yujie, Yan Ziyi and Zhang Jiale showcasing the potential of the next generation.

"We need to have a clear understanding of our strengths and weaknesses. Challenges remain, and we must face the pressure and find solutions with confidence and determination," Gao said.

With fewer than 22 months remaining until the Los Angeles Olympics open, preparations for the Games have become a top priority for Chinese athletes.

"It is vital to deepen reforms in training and competition through new approaches, establish athlete selection criteria for the Olympics, further develop the youth training system, and ensure that no doping violations occur throughout the entire process," Gao added.

During the conference, Gao also emphasized the importance of winter training. He said, "Winter training helps consolidate basic skills, improve capabilities and build momentum. The results will affect athletes' Olympic qualification campaigns and overall preparations throughout the Olympic cycle."

Gao said, "Winter training should follow a science-based approach, with a focus on improving efficiency through high standards and maximum effort."
