While touring the Palace Museum in Beijing recently, designers from Chinese paint maker SKSHU Paint Co., Ltd. (3TREES) delved into pathways to modernize traditional Chinese colors to update the company's coating color design.

Unlike conventional study tours, the journey to the ancient Chinese architectural complex explored the correlations between traditional colors and architectural materials, light, spaces and usage scenarios.
Walking along the central axis of the Palace Museum, designers from 3TREES recorded the colors of the walls, tiles, paintings and marble by referring to the coating color cards in their hands.
When the restraint of vermilion, the brightness of golden yellow, and the layered tones of cyan intertwine to create a spectacular effect, the colors found in the Palace Museum are closely tied to architectural structures and their functions.
After partnering with the Palace Museum Arts & Culture in 2023, 3TREES aligned color proportions, material matching and spatial atmosphere with the concrete needs of modern families to interpret its color aesthetics.
During the same period as the study program, the 30th community store themed "3TREES, Immediate Move-in" opened in Beijing, the capital of China, allowing traditional Chinese colors to enter people's daily lives through the warm walls of living rooms or the soft colors of children's spaces.
Elsewhere in overseas markets where people prefer different colors, 3TREES is striving to decode the correlations between environment, materials, light and cultures as it shifts from pure product export to brand-driven color innovation.
In the Middle East and West Africa, such overseas color research methods also take into consideration local climate conditions featuring high temperatures and strong ultraviolet radiation, as well as natural landscapes and local cultures.

For instance, bright and light colors such as white, off-white and light sandstone are more frequently used in exterior wall coatings in the Middle East, while in Africa, paints in terracotta, ochre, warm brown and other earthy tones have been introduced to blend with the vast natural landscape.

Starting from understanding Chinese-style natural landscape and harmonious living, 3TREES is currently blazing a new path toward internationalization by working closely with partners in different regions to co-develop spatial solutions.
