Interview: Cinecitta's int'l department director sees broader prospects for Italy-China film cooperation

September 09, 2026

Abstract : Italy is stepping up efforts to promote its cinema overseas and sees growing potential for deeper cooperation with China, said Roberto Stabile, Director of the International Department at Cinecitta, an Italian film company.

VENICE, Sept. 9 (Xinhua Silk Road) -- Italy is stepping up efforts to promote its cinema overseas and sees growing potential for deeper cooperation with China, said Roberto Stabile, Director of the International Department at Cinecitta, an Italian film company.

In an interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, Stabile said Cinecitta is the most important studio and the iconic studio of Italy, noting that the organization also promotes Italian cinema abroad on behalf of the country's Ministry of Culture.

"We try to create a kind of link in every country and find an important partner," Stabile said. In China, for example, Cinecitta has established cooperation with institutions, private sector partners and also communications companies in an effort to build the right connections and identify the most effective ways to promote Italian films.

Stabile said Italy and China have significant potential to expand cooperation in the film industry.

He noted that Italy and China signed a new film co-production agreement several months ago, while Italian representatives have also participated in the Shanghai International Film Festival and events in Hong Kong to strengthen exchanges and cooperation.

Stabile said efforts are underway to further expand cooperation between the two countries. "We would like to focus on China next year at the Venice Film Festival because this is the right moment to increase cooperation and try to make really important movies together," he said.

China and Italy are both countries with rich and strong cultural traditions, Stabile said, adding that the current level of film cooperation does not yet fully reflect the potential of the two countries.

"We must do something very important and have films co-produced by Italy and China that can compete in the global market," he said.
