BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhua Silk Road) -- The 2026 World Power Battery Conference kicked off in Yibin, southwest China's Sichuan Province on Thursday, with multiple achievements unveiled.
The two-day conference, under the theme "Electric Power For All & Synergy For Growth", features an opening ceremony, a plenary session, eight thematic sessions, and a range of parallel activities. Participants from government, industry, academia, and research institutions gathered to explore new pathways for the high-quality development of the power battery industry.
At the opening ceremony on Thursday, eight innovative technology achievements in power batteries made during the 2025-2026 period were released. These include ultra-fast-charging power battery technology, high-specific-energy hybrid solid-liquid battery technology, long-lifespan battery technology for battery-swapping passenger vehicles, fourth-generation high-compaction lithium iron phosphate material technology, all-climate thermal management technology for passenger vehicle batteries, and next-generation high-speed winding technology for prismatic batteries.
The opening ceremony also saw the launch of an initiative to build a green supply chain for the battery industry and a project to develop a zero-carbon transportation corridor along the Sichuan section of the National Highway 318.
At the plenary session, the Equipment Industry Development Center of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology launched the Power Battery Industry Development Index (2026).
Ouyang Minggao, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said at the opening ceremony that artificial intelligence (AI) technology is poised to transform the paradigms of battery R&D, manufacturing and use. Shifting the power battery industry toward western regions with rich renewable energy will be an inevitable choice for China's battery industry.
China's installed capacity of power batteries reached 769 GWh in 2025, up 40 percent year on year.
China's total shipments of lithium-ion batteries reached approximately 1,875 GWh in 2025, up 53 percent year on year, accounting for more than 80 percent of the global total.
At the thematic sessions, topics including power battery related policy, global advanced battery technology, battery recycling and energy storage were discussed.
Meanwhile, a number of activities including a showcase of electric battery application achievements and a power battery industrial chain supply-demand matchmaking conference were also held during the conference. (Edited by Li Xueqing with Xinhua Silk Road, lixueqing@xinhua.org)
