Lesotho hails Chinese scholarships for human capital development

August 26, 2026

Abstract : Chinese scholarships and training programs are helping Lesotho develop skilled professionals and ease the financial burden of overseas education, a senior education official said Monday.

MASERU, Aug. 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese scholarships and training programs are helping Lesotho develop skilled professionals and ease the financial burden of overseas education, a senior education official said Monday.

Speaking at a farewell reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Maseru, Ratsiu Majara, principal secretary of Lesotho's Ministry of Education and Training, said China's scholarship support had made an important contribution to the country's human capital development.

"The support means a lot to the country," Majara said, adding that Basotho graduates who had studied in China had gone on to take up senior positions at home and abroad.

He encouraged the departing students to make full use of the opportunity, acquire knowledge and skills, and contribute to Lesotho's development after completing their studies.

Chinese Ambassador to Lesotho Yang Xiaokun said education and human resources development have long been an important part of China-Lesotho cooperation. He said the two countries could further deepen exchanges and cooperation in 2026, which marks both the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges and the 60th anniversary of Lesotho's independence.

"You are part of the human foundation of the China-Lesotho Strategic Partnership," Yang said, encouraging the students to use what they learn to serve Lesotho and strengthen friendship between the two countries.

Kananelo Makolane, speaking on behalf of the scholarship recipients, encouraged fellow students to embrace new experiences in China and make the most of opportunities to study, build friendships and expand their professional networks.

About 40 people, including Lesotho government officials, students and trainees, attended the reception.
