Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway marks 1,000 days of safe operation

July 14, 2026

Abstract : The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, locally known as Whoosh, which links the Indonesian capital Jakarta with the city of Bandung in West Java province, marked 1,000 days of safe operation on Sunday, according to its operator.

JAKARTA, July 13 (Xinhua) -- The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, locally known as Whoosh, which links the Indonesian capital Jakarta with the city of Bandung in West Java province, marked 1,000 days of safe operation on Sunday, according to its operator.

Since entering commercial service, the railway has registered more than 16.58 million passenger trips, while its electric multiple-unit trains have safely traveled over 8.02 million km, with overall operations remaining stable and orderly, said Kereta Cepat Indonesia China (KCIC).

The railway, the first high-speed rail line in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, officially began commercial operations on Oct. 17, 2023.

As of Sunday, a total of 52,730 passenger train services had been operated. The number of daily train services has increased from 14 at the initial stage of operation to 62 currently, while the punctuality rate has remained above 95 percent. The railway handles an average of about 16,000 passenger trips per day, with the highest single-day ridership reaching 26,700, KCIC said.

According to the operator, Chinese and Indonesian operation teams have drawn on China's high-speed railway management experience to establish rules and procedures suited to local conditions, covering train operations, equipment maintenance, passenger services and safety management.

Meanwhile, local high-speed railway personnel have been trained through theoretical courses, simulation exercises and on-the-job instruction. An increasing number of Indonesian employees are now working as train drivers and in passenger services, maintenance and safety management.

As passenger traffic continues to grow, the railway's role in promoting development along the route has become increasingly evident.

The operator has continued to improve its ticketing system, onboard and station services, and transport connections, while introducing services such as frequent-traveler programs, group tickets and family tickets.

Since its opening, more than 866,500 international passengers have traveled on the railway, helping boost tourism, catering, retail and hotel businesses along the route.
