FREETOWN, June 16 (Xinhua) -- The 27th Chinese medical team to Sierra Leone on Tuesday organized a health outreach and humanitarian assistance program in Waterloo, a community on the outskirts of Freetown, the country's capital, to commemorate the International Day of the African Child.
The event, held in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society, provided free medical consultations and humanitarian support to children from a local orphanage and neighboring schools.
The medical team's specialists in ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, pediatrics, internal medicine and general surgery conducted comprehensive health examinations for more than 50 children at the orphanage. During the screenings, doctors identified several health conditions, including refractive errors, peptic ulcers and umbilical hernias.
Medical experts offered preliminary treatment advice and developed follow-up care plans to ensure that the children receive appropriate medical attention.
In addition to healthcare services, the Chinese medical team organized recreational and educational activities that attracted more than 200 students from surrounding schools, along with the donation of school bags, stationery, toys and food supplies to the orphanage.
Alexander H. M. Kamara, assistant parish priest and chaplain of the Waterloo Orthodox Christian School, expressed appreciation for the initiative, saying that "the arrival of the Chinese medical team has provided tangible healthcare support for our children."
The medical team said the outreach aimed not only to improve children's health through multidisciplinary medical services but also to promote friendship and cultural exchange between the peoples of China and Sierra Leone.
Through the event, health records were established for children at the orphanage, while hundreds of local students benefited from interactive activities designed to encourage learning, wellbeing and mutual understanding.
