Confucius Institute advances Chinese teaching in Ghana via new virtual platform

May 15, 2026

Abstract : The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana (CIUG) on Thursday launched a virtual classroom project to expand access to Chinese language education in the West African country.

ACCRA, May 14 (Xinhua) -- The Confucius Institute at the University of Ghana (CIUG) on Thursday launched a virtual classroom project to expand access to Chinese language education in the West African country.

Liu Baijun, Chinese director of CIUG, who commissioned the center at the North Hill International School in Accra, said that the virtual classroom is part of the institute's efforts to address the shortage of Chinese language teachers in Ghana.

"We are facing a real challenge: the shortage of professional Chinese teachers and limited learning resources cannot meet the fast-growing local demand for Chinese education. It has become urgent to innovate teaching models and improve learning conditions to promote localized Chinese teaching in Ghana," Liu said.

"Screens connect cultures and books build friendship. Taking this valuable opportunity during the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges, CIUG will make excellent use of all equipment and continuously improve localized Chinese teaching, strengthen youth cultural exchanges and further enhance the friendly cooperation between China and Ghana," he added.

Tang Hong, chairman of the Ghana Association of Chinese Societies, said that the launch of the project marked the opening of another window of friendship between China and Ghana.

"Let us join hands and work together for the healthy growth and education of the next generation in Ghana and for the enduring friendship between China and Ghana, making every contribution positive and meaningful," Tang said.

Kwame Asare-Bediako Sarpong, director of education at North Hill International School, expressed delight at hosting the virtual classroom project.

"This initiative aims to equip our learners with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a globalized world. By so doing, our learners will gain a competitive edge and be better prepared for future opportunities," Sarpong added.
