Inner Mongolia's smart ports boost clearance efficiency, building gateway of opening-up to the north

December 22, 2025

Abstract : North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has carried out comprehensive smart port reforms in recent years, advancing automated operations, intelligent inspection, and smart management at key land ports.

BEIJING, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has carried out comprehensive smart port reforms in recent years, advancing automated operations, intelligent inspection, and smart management at key land ports.

In terms of automated operations, China's first Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV) cross-border unmanned smart transport channel, launched at the Ganqmod Port, allows vehicles to move automatically on the China-Mongolia border, enabling rapid clearance. This model boasts a daily transport capacity up to five times greater than traditional container trucks. Meanwhile, the testing of a 5G-enabled cross-border unmanned transport system for heavy trucks at the Ceke Port is underway. Once operational, it is set to become the country's first highly reliable unmanned cross-border transport model operating in a 5G environment.

As for intelligent inspection, all 12 highway ports in Inner Mongolia have achieved integrated data collection and one-stop inspection for regulatory information. The region has pioneered domestic recognition of third-party overseas inspection results. This allows imported coal and timber meeting Chinese standards to be cleared upon arrival, significantly speeding up clearance for businesses.

In smart management, the deployment of large-scale mechanical inspection equipment, AI-based image review systems, and intelligent management platforms has enabled 70 percent of joint inspection personnel to shift from basic operational tasks to other critical posts, enhancing the professional capacity of port operations management. At pilot ports, the ratio of cargo cleared per 10,000 tonnes to on-site operational staff improved from 15:1 to 51:1.

Recently, Manzhouli Port and Ganqmod Port have been selected as the national typical cases of smart port construction. In the first 11 months of this year, the cargo throughput of Inner Mongolia's ports reached 120 million tonnes, hitting a record high for the period, according to Hohhot Customs.
