LILONGWE, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- As the 2025 African Netball Cup on Sunday concluded in Malawi, the host venue Griffin Saenda Sports Complex drew widespread attention for its modern facilities and capacity.
Commissioned in 2022 and built by Chinese contractor China Railway 20th Bureau Group, the complex covers about 20,000 square meters and emerges as Malawi's largest integrated indoor and outdoor sports facility, providing dedicated infrastructure for netball and other sporting events.
Chen Zhiming, project manager of the Chinese company, said the complex, which has a seating capacity of about 4,000, was designed to improve comfort for athletes and spectators and to meet the requirements of international competitions.
Netball officials from participating countries spoke highly of the facility, saying it has enhanced Malawi's capacity to host international tournaments.
Mubiru Rashid, head coach for Ugandan national netball team, noted that previous regional competitions in Malawi were often played at open venues, while the new complex provides a dedicated and enclosed setting for major events.
"When you look at the past years, Malawi used to play these Africa games outside in the open. But this time they have this infrastructure, which is very beautiful and they have organized the tournament very well," Rashid told Xinhua.
Jenny van Dyk, head coach for the South African national netball team, said the facility reflects growing investment in sports infrastructure in the region, adding that purpose-built venues are essential for improving competition standards and attracting high-level tournaments.
According to Peace Kalua, Malawi national netball team's head coach, the facility has helped raise interest in the tournament and could contribute to the development of local sports through increased match attendance and facility use.
