Tech innovation fuels global expansion of China's green shipping service "little giant" ZEME

December 05, 2025

Abstract : China's green shipping service provider Zhejiang Energy Marine Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. (ZEME) had received cumulative global orders of over 1,000 vessel scrubbers by July 2025 powered by technological innovation amid global green shipping transition.

BEIJING, Dec. 5 (Xinhua) -- China's green shipping service provider Zhejiang Energy Marine Environmental Technology Co., Ltd. (ZEME) had received cumulative global orders of over 1,000 vessel scrubbers by July 2025 powered by technological innovation amid global green shipping transition.

Focused on desulfurization, decarbonization, and clean fuel solutions, ZEME is a national-level "little giant" enterprise recognized by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology for its high growth potential, advanced technology, and strong market competitiveness, driving toward a greener and more sustainable maritime future.

Supported by sustained R&D investment and Zhejiang Provincial Energy Group, its parent company, ZEME has iteratively upgraded marine desulfurization technologies and achieved breakthroughs including Enhanced Seawater Magnesium-Based Sulfur Dioxide Absorption technology and Compact High-Efficiency Scrubbers. Its Hybrid Scrubber System has been certified by nine major international classification societies.

To better serve small and medium-sized vessels, the company introduced an "open deck" scrubber design that significantly reduces manufacturing costs and retrofitting time. ZEME has since expanded from providing a single desulfurization solution to delivering a portfolio of high-end retrofit technologies and energy-saving products.

ZEME's technological advantages have triggered its global market expansion. Its total scrubber order volume exceeded 2,000 in 2024, with total contract value increasing 22.4 percent year on year. Overseas orders signed by the end of 2024 surpassed 1.5 billion U.S. dollars. As of July 2025, it ranked 1st worldwide in desulfurization product orders. Its energy-saving solutions are estimated to reduce emissions by up to 20 percent per vessel.

ZEME has also earned its reputation for high-quality retrofit services including high-efficiency installation, 7/24 rapid response, and swift after-sales problem resolution.

It pioneered modular prefabrication in scrubber retrofitting, shortening retrofit period to 18 days for open-loop systems and 33 days for hybrid systems, remarkably reducing port layovers.

Beyond scrubbers, ZEME is expanding across the full green shipping industrial chain. Over 20 decarbonization-related products, including the GHG Green Gas Continuous Emission Monitoring System (GHG-CEMS), have been launched.

In 2025, it opened overseas headquarters in Singapore to serve European and Asian markets, and established a ship-building and retrofitting base in Suzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province.

ZEME's retrofitting efficiency was highlighted by the MSC RINI III project, completed in only 49 days and covering multiple system upgrades.

ZEME is not simply exporting equipment but delivering China's solutions for sustainable development, a ZEME representative said. The company plans to continue investing in core technologies to build a comprehensive and integrated green-shipping industrial ecosystem.
