China makes marked strides in addressing climate change: report

October 30, 2025

Abstract : China has made marked progress in addressing climate change since it proposed its carbon peak and neutrality goals five years ago, according to a report released by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on Wednesday.

BEIJING, Oct. 29 (Xinhua) -- China has made marked progress in addressing climate change since it proposed its carbon peak and neutrality goals five years ago, according to a report released by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on Wednesday.

Notable achievements in advancing green, low-carbon transition have been realized across sectors such as transportation and construction, and the country's control over non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions has also been continuously strengthened, according to the 2025 annual report on China's policies and actions to address climate change.

In 2020, China set the dual carbon goals of peaking carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.

In late September, China announced its 2035 Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). It is the first time China has set an absolute emissions reduction target, marking the country's shift from intensity-based control to total emissions control.

Ministry official Xia Yingxian told a Wednesday press conference that it is estimated that by 2035, China's net greenhouse gas emissions will drop from their peak level by over 1 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent.

He said that China's NDCs will inject strong momentum and confidence into global climate governance.

Xia noted that the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) to be held in Brazil in November will be crucial to the current multilateral process of combating climate change.

China will support Brazil to work with other parties to achieve a positive and balanced outcome, Xia said.
