DHAKA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- The Chinese government here on Tuesday donated flood rescue equipment to the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to help the country better prepare for and respond to natural disasters.
The donation includes life vests, rubber boats, life rafts, water purification units, and so on.
BDRCS Chairman Md Azizul Islam said in the handover ceremony that these modern rescue tools will enable their volunteers to respond more efficiently to floods, cyclones and tidal surges. "The BDRCS remains steadfast in its mission to serve humanity and such contributions significantly enhance our operational strength."
Noting Bangladesh is a country vulnerable to floods and natural disasters, Faruk-E-Azam, adviser to the Bangladesh Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, said, "This support from the Chinese government will further accelerate our rescue and relief activities."
The adviser said this handover is a reflection of the long-standing friendship and cooperation between Bangladesh and China. "We deeply appreciate this solidarity and look forward to further cooperation in the field of disaster management and humanitarian assistance."
For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen said China firmly supports Bangladesh in improving people's livelihood and advancing social development, adding that the donation is intended to enhance Bangladesh's capacity for disaster prevention and mitigation.
Bangladesh is located in South Asia with a low-lying terrain and hundreds of rivers across the country. From June to September each year, the monsoon season brings heavy rainfall, which frequently triggers natural disasters such as floods, landslides, and mudslides.
