AMMAN, May 19 (Xinhua) -- A cultural event, "Tea for Harmony," was held here Sunday to showcase the cultural and tourist treasures of China's northwestern province of Gansu.
The event, jointly organized by the China Cultural Center in Amman and the Department of Culture and Tourism of Gansu Province with the support of the Chinese Embassy in Amman, featured characteristic artistic shows from Gansu, including dancing, singing, as well as erhu and pipa performances, among others.
A variety of intangible cultural heritage experience activities was also provided for the guests, such as tea ceremonies, traditional Chinese medicine, egg-carving, wheat straw painting and shadow puppetry.
In his remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Jordan Chen Chuandong said Gansu is a major part of the ancient Silk Road where the Islamic civilization took root and Buddhist mural art flourished. The theme of the event "Tea for Harmony" demonstrates China's values and policy propositions of always firmly supporting, maintaining and promoting world peace.
Nidal Ayasrah, secretary general of the Jordanian Ministry of Culture, said that tea culture has spread from China to all over the world, and contains profound connotations such as tolerance, love, gratitude and respect.
He added that the friendship between Jordan and China stems from shared cultural traditions, values and spiritual concepts rooted in Eastern philosophy, and the two countries had been closely connected by the Silk Road for a thousand years.
Gong Jiajia, deputy director of the Culture and Tourism Department in Gansu, said that China and Jordan respectively represent the Chinese and Arab civilizations, which have a lot in common. The event aims to use tea as a medium and culture as a bridge to closely connect China and Jordan.
The event will last until Wednesday.
