BEIJING, March 28 (Xinhua) -- State Grid Shenyang Electric Power Supply Company is using drones for inspection of the 10-kilovolt power lines which are supplying electricity to motor-pumped wells during spring farming season in Shenyang, capital city of northeast China’s Liaoning Province.
A single drone can inspect over 17 kilometers of lines per day, nearly fivefold increase in efficiency compared to manual inspections, said a staff with the local power grid company. Each drone can cover the 53 well-distributed transformer zones along the 10-kilovolt lines, with an accuracy rate of 90 percent in identifying defects such as damaged insulators and broken strands in power lines.
During this year's spring farming season, the grid company is planning to expand the use of autonomous drones to inspect the power lines that are connected to more than 4,900 operational motor-pumped wells in rural Shenyang, further improving inspection efficiency, ensuring reliable power supply, and reducing safety risks.
