Tanzania completes trial runs for Chinese-made SGR cargo wagons

March 11, 2025

Abstract : The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) on Monday announced the successful completion of trial runs for 264 Chinese-made cargo wagons for standard gauge railway (SGR) electric trains.

DAR ES SALAAM, March 10 (Xinhua) -- The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) on Monday announced the successful completion of trial runs for 264 Chinese-made cargo wagons for standard gauge railway (SGR) electric trains.

The TRC said in a statement that the Land Transport Regulatory Authority has confirmed that the 264 cargo wagons meet the required standards after one month of trial runs along the SGR route between Dar es Salaam and Dodoma via Morogoro.

According to the statement, the wagons imported in December 2024 are part of 1,430 cargo wagons to be made by China's CRRC Qiqihar Rolling Stock Co., Ltd. Of the 264 wagons, 200 will be used for ferrying containers and 64 for carrying loose cargo. The date for commercial operations of the cargo wagons will be announced in due course.

On Aug. 1, 2024, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan officially launched commercial passenger operations of the SGR electric train services from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma via Morogoro.

TRC Director General Masanja Kadogosa said the entire SGR project will cover 1,596 km from Dar es Salaam to the Mwanza region, and upon completion, the modern rail link will cut travel time significantly and boost economic development in Tanzania and across the region.
