Nigerian students celebrate Chinese Spring Festival with dumpling-making, cultural exchange

February 16, 2025

Abstract : Dozens of Nigerian students embraced Chinese cultural traditions on Friday, learning to make and enjoy dumplings as part of a Spring Festival celebration in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

ABUJA, Feb. 15 (Xinhua) -- Dozens of Nigerian students embraced Chinese cultural traditions on Friday, learning to make and enjoy dumplings as part of a Spring Festival celebration in Nigeria's capital, Abuja.

Hosted by the Chinese Cultural Center in Abuja, the event brought together students from 12 Chinese corner schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It highlighted the cultural significance of dumplings in Chinese tradition, offering participants a hands-on experience of family togetherness and good fortune -- key elements of the Spring Festival.

For many students, the event provided a first taste of both the festival and its culinary traditions.

"I have learned that China is a very beautiful place. We celebrated the Spring Festival, and this is what they use to celebrate it -- dumplings," said Divine Joy, one of the participating students. "It symbolizes reunion, the coming together of families. It is so special. It brings good luck to the year. And it is delicious!"

Chisom Ogoro, 14, who had previously attempted to make dumplings after watching Chinese movies, was thrilled by the opportunity. "It is actually super nice and so good. I have always wanted to try it, and I am so glad I got to taste it today," the student said.

Beyond the culinary experience, students explored Chinese calligraphy and a photo exhibition on the country's history and culture. The event aimed to deepen their understanding of Chinese traditions while strengthening cultural ties between China and Nigeria.

Fatima Gambo, director of the FCT Secondary Education Board, said the event reaffirmed the commitment to fostering cultural collaboration between China and Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of cultural exchange and mutual learning.
