BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- In Nanping, a city in east China's Fujian Province with a rich history of tea cultivation, electricity is more than just a daily necessity as it has become a driving force behind the growth of the tea industry.
From developing innovative tea-making equipment to ensuring optimal conditions for tea storage, State Grid Nanping Electric Power Supply Company has provided targeted power solutions and technical support to promote the green transition of the entire tea production chain.
The tea industry in Nanping is entering an era of full electrification. To meet the demands of upgrading traditional tea-making techniques, local power providers collaborated with the authorities and tea enterprises to create the "charcoal-like roasting" tea-making machine.
This equipment not only replicates the flavor of charcoal-roasted tea but also improves production efficiency, reducing energy costs by about 80 percent. After several rounds of testing since 2020, the machine has automated the tea roasting process, offering an eco-friendly and efficient way for tea processing.
Zhenghe County of Nanping, renowned for its high-quality white tea, now boasts its intelligent temperature-controlled tea storage facility. Built through a partnership between the local government and the power grid, the facility is equipped with advanced temperature and humidity control systems.
This innovation replaces traditional decentralized storage methods, significantly reducing storage costs while ensuring long-term freshness of tea. To support the white tea industry, a new 10-kilovolt power line was constructed, enhancing both power supply reliability and flexibility.
Songxi County of Nanping, known for its steamed green tea with a refreshing flavor, has solved the temperature control challenges of traditional steaming methods through fully electric tea-steaming equipment. Precise temperature control preserves the tea's natural aroma and premium quality, helping tea farmers enhance the competitiveness of their products.
The support provided by local power grid extends beyond individual projects. By upgrading rural power infrastructure, the grid has played a critical role in processes like black tea fermentation, oolong tea roasting, white tea storage, and green tea fixation.
By 2023, Nanping's tea plantations covered 721,000 mu (approximately 48,067 hectares), generating a gross tea output value of 5.32 billion yuan. The entire tea industry chain's output value has increased by 36.5 percent since 2020, reaching 44.51 billion yuan.
Through precise and sustainable support, local power grid is turning Nanping's "green leaves" into "golden leaves" which fuel the local economy.
