LIMA, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- The Belt and Road Economic Information Partnership (BREIP), which was initiated by Xinhua News Agency, inaugurated a Latin American liaison office in Lima, Peru on Friday during an annual meeting focusing on pragmatic cooperation between China and Peru under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Established at Peruvian news agency Andina, the liaison office will serve as a key bridge connecting BREIP member institutions across Latin America.
By gathering localized economic information, organizing themed activities, and facilitating business matchmaking, it aims to enhance information connectivity and foster deeper exchanges in trade, information technology, and green development between China and Latin American countries.
Peru has been a steadfast participant and supporter of the BRI. Since the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the BRI in 2019, cooperation between China and Peru has yielded significant achievements, especially in economic, financial, and cultural sectors.
Peru is one of the first Latin American countries to establish diplomatic ties and a comprehensive strategic partnership with the People's Republic of China. The establishment of the liaison office in Lima further underscores this pivotal relationship.
Launched in 2019, the BREIP was designed to facilitate mutual understanding through information sharing, thus promoting win-win economic and trade cooperation among member institutions. Currently, it includes 65 member institutions from 39 countries and regions.
The Latin American liaison office marks the third regional office under the BREIP. The first liaison office was inaugurated in Shanghai in September 2023, and the Eastern European liaison office was unveiled in Budapest, Hungary this May.
The annual meeting was co-hosted by China Economic Information Service of Xinhua News Agency and Peruvian news agency Andina, with a co-organizer from China Southern Power Grid.
