BEIJING, Nov. 8 (Xinhua) -- State Grid Changji Electric Power Co., Ltd. has launched a pioneering approach by introducing low-altitude autonomous drone inspection technology at the 220 kV Ningzhouhu Substation in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.
This marks the first time that Xinjiang's Changji conducted substation inspections, establishing a cutting-edge air-ground integrated inspection model.
With this innovative technology, substation inspection efficiency and intelligence have advanced significantly. The drones navigate autonomously at low altitudes of 1.5 meters or higher, skillfully maneuvering around equipment to capture and assess conditions from both ground-up and aerial perspectives.
This expansion of inspection angles provides a more precise and comprehensive view of substation equipment, overcoming the magnetic interference challenges that traditionally hinder drone operations in these zones.
The technology utilizes a multi-layered inspection strategy that enhances coverage at all substation levels. High-altitude inspections monitor upper structures like braces, lightning rods, and attachments to detect any faults. Mid- and low-altitude flights, meanwhile, focus on components such as equipment surfaces and oil level indicators, enabling close-up and detailed evaluations.
Following each flight, drones instantly transmit captured data to an intelligent inspection system, where advanced defect recognition algorithms rapidly analyze images and generate inspection reports. This swift data processing contributes to a 100-percent detection accuracy rate for potential issues, making inspections more reliable and thorough.
An integrated remote inspection platform combines drones, inspection robots, and high-definition cameras, creating a 3D monitoring system. This cohesive setup significantly improves the quality and efficiency of maintenance and management, setting a new standard for substation operations in the region.
Traditionally, substation inspections relied on personnel or wheeled and rail-mounted robots. With the addition of autonomous drone technology, the State Grid Changji branch has transformed inspection methods, reinforcing the effectiveness and safety of power infrastructure maintenance across Xinjiang.
